Horsey Sam
Tuesday, October 6, 2026 by Connie Peters

Springed rocking horse named Horsey Sam,
I got when I was three.
He rocked and squeaked and jounced and bounced.
I rode so jauntily.
And then my sister came along
and we rode him double.
Then she kept Sam for quite a while,
till size became trouble.
She passed him to my nephew Tom.
He galloped ‘cross the range.
My daughter then came next in line,
so Horsey made the change.
Passed Horsey Sam on to my son,
and for a time he rode.
And when he grew too big for Sam,
two nieces took him home.
Through several kids and fifty years,
at last I got Sam back,
though he no longer has his springs,
Who Would Have Thought?
May the beauty of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17
I can’t remember what Horsey Sam looked like when he was new, since I was only 3. I can imagine him shiny, coming off the assembly line in the early 60s. Could the factory workers imagine that their product would bring so much joy through a couple generations of kids. Most of the paint is worn off him now, he’s mostly a beige color. I just have the horse not the frame. But there’s something comforting about seeing him on the top shelf of my desk in my office. A thing that’s been around almost as long as I have.
I can still imagine the sound his springs made when we bounced on him. And how his back legs would hit the floor when my sister and I rode him together, a sign that I was getting too big for Horsey Sam and so began the passing him down to a long line of children thereafter. I’m glad my children got to ride Horsey Sam.
The things we make can have a ripple effect down through time. That’s why it’s important when we create a craft, build something, or paint a picture, to pray about it and and ask that the ideas would originate in His heart, so down through the ages the creation can give joy to those who have it. We will never match the wonderful works God created when he made the world, but some of His creativity is in us waiting to do some good for others now and through the ages.
Lord, bless Your artists, builders and all creative people to do good works with their hands to bless others to Your honor and glory throughout generations.
